Sleep meditation helps with lack of sleep
I like to meditate regularly, it is one of my ‘hobbies’, so to speak. While cruising some of the meditation blogs for that interest me, I found a great post regarding meditation and sleep that I have to mention, because it touches on a point I wanted to write about sooner or later anyway.
Did you know that one of the easiest treatments for lack of sleep is a sleep meditation, which is one of the available meditation types that you can practice?Lack of sleep has several causes, effects and symptoms, but regardless of them, meditation can help you get your so needed good night sleep and rest. The main idea here is that while meditating, you will reach a deeper level of relaxation, which is all that’s needed to sleep well and wake up the next day refreshed. How many times we cannot sleep due to unnecessary worry, unsolved problems, money issues, family issues, work related issues, the morning meeting with the boss, and so on? When we meditate using the sleep meditation, our mind will slow down in producing these worry thouths, and will calm down, relax enough to give us the rest that we need.
It’s amazing really and so few people are actually doing this. Many people are taking drugs, alcohol, pretty much everything to fall asleep, but fact is, most of them do not work. What we tend to forget here is that we need a natural way of coping with lack of sleep, which will not cause side effects and will not dumb us down in the process. Funny thing is, for some people sleeping pills are having the exact opposite effect: they cannot fall asleep. They turn and turn and twist and turn, their eyes drop, but then shoot up right away with adrenaline pumping in their veins, and that leaves them completely exhausted the next day.
Alternatively, people do fall asleep, and sleep like stone, and the next day they’re all groggy and confused. That is not healthy either. One needs a regular sleep, with REM sessions, with dreams, so that when they wake up the next day, they are ready to start the day fresh.
Meditation, if followed for about 20 minutes regularly every evening before going to sleep, will give you a good night, will leave you fresh, will boost the immune system and during sleep, removes the stress from the body.
If you’re not using sleep meditation as a cure for your lack of sleep, you’re missing out on a great natural treatment for your body and soul.

Since meditating (first TM then mindfulness of breathing) regularly for the last few years, I’ve gone from sleeping through the night, to waking half a dozen times or so each night. If I stop meditating for a month or so my sleep returns to normal, but I begin to lose the benefit of meditation. There are plenty of people talking of meditation as a cure for insomnia, but not what to do if it is the cause! Any thoughts?
This may be too old for you too read John. But, I was always taught that meditating close to night time, was running risky of keeping you awake. Especially if any of that energy rises to the head. I would make sure the meditation is very light, and kept in the lower stomach. With a lot of sleep problems, the energy and thoughts rises to the head. Hope that helps.
