Indigestion - #1 Physical Cause of Lack of Sleep - part I
Lack of sleep in one form or another, accompanies nearly every illness, but it occurs also in entirely healthy people. In the majority of cases it is a state of mind originated in fear and apprehension. Frequently, however, it can also have an immediate physical cause, such as indigestion, or toothache.
Maybe one of the most acute problems that cause insomnia is indigestion. People often ignore it, thus failing to cure their lack of sleep right from the start. We usually take a lot of freedom with our bodily functions and we forget very easily that our digestive tract is one of the most important part of us being healthy. It’s very few of us who actually get to enjoy old age without having experienced some sort of digestion disorder or another at some point or another. There are several effects of indigestion, and one of the most important - and overlooked ones - is sleep disorder, or lack of sleep. This is very true particularly in people having a predominantly nervous temperament.
Lack of sleep problems caused by indigestion will occur mostly in so called ‘brain-workers’, in people engaged in sedentary occupations (working in your office the whole day, for example), and in those exposed to anxious and depressing emotional experiences. Constant worry, anxiety, consternation, terror and grief - so common nowadays around the world, have a strong effect on our digestion system, which in turn affects other functions of the body.
This is because many people don’t know that indigestion comes comes in various forms: emotional indigestion, mental indigestion, and physical indigestion. Most of the people are aware of physical indigestion, which everybody associates with eating too much of the wrong foods late at night, such as caffeine or sugar, etc. However mental indigestion occurs when, regardless of one’s healthy diet, a person will stay up all night thinking about the previous day’s activities, or trying to solve a puzzle that he left behind at work.
And emotional indigestion is pretty similar, is basically the stuff I mentioned above regarding constant worry about the world, about problems, about a personal relationship going sour, etc.
So as you can see, indigestion is not necessarily physical, BUT the result is lack of sleep, or insomnia. Until relatively recently indigestion has not been connected with lack of sleep, particularly the mental and emotional indigestion, and nowaday scientists are looking much deeper into this link between the two, seemingly separated areas of our internal system.
